Klif- en linksgolf op z’n best
Noord-Wales is de best bezochte golfbestemming van Groot-Brittannië en dat is te danken aan de nabijheid van twee vliegvelden: Liverpool en Manchester. Vanaf daar is het nog wel zo’n twee uur rijden naar de geweldige golfregio Noord-Wales, maar als je die moeite hebt genomen zul je er geen spijt van hebben!
Het noorden van Wales staat bekend om zijn prachtige bergachtige landschap waarin je kastelen en dorpjes met onuitspreekbare namen treft. Maar in dit adembenemende en cultuurrijke deel van Wales, vooral dicht aan zee, liggen ook uitstekende en unieke golfbanen met als hoogtepunten Nefyn & District, Royal St Davids en Aberdovey. In de omgeving van deze klassiekers zijn er ook nog heel wat verborgen pareltjes.
Nefyn & District is de Wales-variant van Old Head Golf Links in Ierland. Beide banen liggen op spectaculair hoge kliffen van een schiereiland. Daarom heb je op Nefyn & District op elke tee een prachtig uitzicht op de zee. Een bezoek aan deze baan is door de bijzondere locatie bijna een surrealistische ervaring, maar Royal St. Davids mag er ook zijn. Deze traditionele links course met geonduleerde fairways en snelle greens ligt ingeklemd tussen Harlech Castle, een indrukwekkend kasteel bovenop een klif, en de Ierse Zee.
Aberdovey Golf Club is een natuurlijke linksbaan nabij Nationaal Park Snowdonia, een bergachtig gebied met de hoogste piek van Wales (1085 meter hoog). De locatie van de baan is extra mooi omdat die ook nog eens ligt op een plek waar de riviermonding Dovey Estuary in de zee uitkomt. Zoals zo vaak op klassieke links speel je langs de kust, eerst negen holes “uit” en daarna negen holes “in”. En zoals zo vaak op linksbanen wordt de baan begrensd door een spoorlijn. Aberdovey Golf Club heeft extra bekendheid gekregen door de lovende woorden van de beroemde golfschrijver Bernard Darwin. Deze kleinzoon van de natuurwetenschapper Charles Darwin speelde in zijn jeugd op Aberdovey.
Eenmaal in Noord-Wales mag je ook Porthmadog Golf Club niet missen. Deze baan, een ontwerp van vijfvoudig Brits Open-kampioen James Braid, heeft een gespleten persoonlijkheid. De eerste negen hebben het karakter van een parkbaan maar op de tweede negen biedt Porthmadog fantastisch linksgolf. Porthmadog ligt vlakbij Criccieth en dit charmante dorpje is een geweldige uitvalsbasis voor een golfvakantie in Noord-Wales. Voor wie nog meer golf wil spelen in dit aantrekkelijke deel van het Verenigd Koninkrijk is er meer dan genoeg keuze. Op het eiland Anglesey zijn Bull Bay en Holyhead Golf echte aanraders en aan de noordkust geldt dit voor Conwy (regionaal bekend als Caernarvonshire) en North Wales Golf Club.

In 2005 we celebrated 100 years of links golfing excellence. We have buggies, electric trolleys and pull trolleys available to hire from our Professional Mark Pilkington. We have 2 practice grounds, a practice net and a putting green on site to help you prepare for your round. After your game you are welcome to enjoy all areas of the clubhouse.
