Scottish Highlands

The Highlands are famous for Loch Ness, stunning scenery, great whisky and of course golf. Home to one of the worlds great golf courses, Royal Dornoch it is certainly worth the trek north. However the Highlands offers so much more!

Dornoch

Playing the championship course at Royal Dornoch is second only to a round on the 'Old Course' in terms of the great golfing pilgrimages. Golf has been played over the Dornoch links land since 1616 with the Dornoch Golf Club being officially formed in 1877. A more natural setting is hard to imagine with course heading out for 8 holes along a ridge line and turns around and head back through the valley. If you visit in April & May you will get to experience the beauty of the gorse in all its glory. The clubs second course the Struie is also a fine links and contains four of the original holes from the championship course.

Just 20mins north of Dornoch is the town of Golspie and its lovely course which has a split personally. A little further north you come across what many people believed to be the most natural golf course in the world, Brora Golf Club. You will need to share the fairways with the local green keepers, the sheep and cattle will be out mowing the grass. Another out & back course, Brora is an absolute treat!

There are two more fine links when you're in this part of the Highlands. Tain Golf Club is another wonderful course who can trace its roots back Old Tom Morris who laid out the course in 1890. Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club is on a little peninsular that sticks out into the Moray Firth giving it a unique location. Formed in 1793 it is the 15th oldest golf club in the world.

Inverness

Just minutes from Inverses is the modern links of Castle Stuart designed by Gil Hanse and Mark Parsinen. It has been the host to the Scottish Open several times, which traditionally has been used as a lead up event to the Open Championship. Phil Mickelson won the 2013 Scottish Open before going on to win the 'Open Championship' at Muirfield the very next week.

Nairn Golf Club is a traditional links course with beautiful views over the Moray Firth from almost every hole. Further east is Moray Golf Club at Lossiemouth, 36 holes of links golf and a clubhouse that's reminds people of the R & A's. Nairn Dunbar, Muir of Ord, Boat of Garten are just some of the wonderful golf to be played in the area.

Accommodation

There are several good places to base yourself when you're in the Highlands with the majority staying in the city of Inverness. But the villages of Dornoch and Nairn also offer splendid lodgings and are well situated to many of the best courses. In fact the town of Dornoch offers an experience that only St Andrews can match in terms of golf and golfing atmosphere. Don't forget the other attractions when your in the area, such as whisky tastings, hunting, fishing and dolphin watching, to name a few. Of course Loch Ness shouldn't be missed!
